I don't get this story. If you're the type to forge SS cards, you're
not so inept as to need to bring your computer in to copy some disks.
(Maybe the HD failed and she was trying to recover the data?) But she
was charged not with having stuff on the drive; she was charged with
forgery and issuing worthless checks. But then the comment from the
sheriff and the title of the article are about ID.

Anyway, I'm hearing more and more stories of people getting in trouble
for what's on their hard drives. It's a good time to start learning how
to encrypt.

"Teacher accused of forging ID cards
BATON ROUGE, La. -- A high school teacher has been accused of forging
Social Security cards, federal work authorization cards and driver's
licenses from Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador.
Edyce Stone Rodriguez, 41, of Baton Rouge, was arrested Dec. 31 and
booked with one count of forgery and three counts of issuing worthless
checks, according to sheriff's records. She was released on $12,000
bond.
Rodriguez was arrested after she took her personal computer to a store
on Dec. 19 to have some files copied to disks, sheriff's spokesman Fred
Raiford. Authorities were notified after employees noticed what
appeared to be counterfeit cards on her hard drive, Raiford said.
"You don't do this unless you're helping illegal aliens get work or
live in this country," Raiford said.
Raiford said an investigation was continuing. Rodriguez could not be
reached for comment. Directory assistance did not have a listing for
her."

Of course, that means the store clerks were not just copying files;
they were also opening them up and looking at them. Perhaps they
should be charged with something, too. - ncXVI
