I went to a bar recently and my friend got his id scanned. They swiped
the mag-strip first, and it didn't work, then they scanned the barcode,
and i guess it went through cause he got a wristband. Anybody know what
exactly happened, and/or if i can make a barcode with state info on it
easier than encoding the magstrip? (note: his id was not made by me)

just search for it dude, barcodes are way easier. look around for
pdf-center and then check out www.aamva.org for the official
documentation outlining the proper coding of pdf417 style 2d barcodes.

Most likely the person your friend bought the id from doesnt have a
magnetic encoder because they're pretty expensive. So the next best
thing like sync was talking about was just to encode 2 dimensional with
all his information. Most states now are including a 2d barcode on the
back of their drivers licences. What state was his id from?
